eBook cover design and artwork
Sometimes you don't even have to meet a client, or know their name!
Last year someone I follow on Twitter mentioned that she was writing a book and asked if anyone was interested in reading an early version for feedback purposes.
I volunteered and was emailed a Word document, read it and loved it. I gave my feedback and wished her luck with the rest of the project.
Recently she mentioned that she was working on a cover but was failing to come up with anything she was happy with. I offered help if needed.
Having read and enjoyed the book I thought I had an idea which would suit both the title and content. Luckily the author agreed and the design was quickly accepted, rendered and delivered.
The eBook is now on sale at Smashwords.
Photoshop collage of 40+ images for vehicle signage
All images © 2011 Derek Armsden Design
The brief was to create an image to be used on the sides of a delivery truck for Beyond India, North Adelaide. Over 100 photographs were taken of the chefs preparing food and approximately 45 were combined using Photoshop to create the finished composite. I have shown 5 of the key images just to give you an idea. The flames alone use 4 images!
Illustrating the growth of cancer cells - with marshmallows!
I was approached by a professor who was writing a book about cancer. He wanted a series of illustrations to show how cancer cells multiply.
First I tried simple outlines of circles with the original mass spreading out as the cancer multipled within it. No, they had to be more textured, spread out less.
So I tried 3d illustration software with slightly blobby shaped things. No, they had to be squishier.
I woke up a few days later with marshmallows in my head. They come in 2 colours. Perfect. I got a picture frame so they couldn't spread out, sticky taped that to my scanner and loosely loaded it with "healthy cell" marshmallows. Then I swapped one "cell" for a "cancer cell" and started doubling until I couldn't squeeze in any more. A bit of time with photoshop filters and colour fiddling and... happy client!
